JohnMoD writes With the advent of forge.mil, etc. the military seems to be getting on board with free and open source software. A working group meeting is going to be held at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, August 12-13, 2009. There’s a pretty good lineup of speakers including a Marine from the Iraq-Marine Expeditionary Forces, who was on the ground and saw the agility open source gave to him and his soldiers. A number of OSS projects are going to be meeting there: Delta 3D, OpenCPI, FalconView, OSSIM, Red Hat, etc.

Black Mana Studios managed to find a worthwhile niche where no app currently existed and deliver a solid first offering in Screenplay. As the name suggests, Screenplay allows you to edit screenplays on your iPhone/iPod. A writer on the go could simply jot down notes with the built-in notes app. If they have the new 3.0 software, they can also record voice memos. So where does this app fit in? Screenplay allows you to properly format your screenplays easily, auto-complete character names, reorder scenes easily, and email your work.

I rarely ever would consider republishing someone else’s content on this blog, if it had already been published elsewhere. I feel, however, that Benjamin Mako Hill’s essay and blog post “Taking a Principled Position on Software Freedom” deserves special treatment. It was the softly spoken and thought provoking nature of the piece, making subtle points about the differences between using the best software available and using free software that caught my eye and convinced me it was worth sharing with the wider community.

Podcasting is a great way to share your expertise with visitors to your site, or simply entertain them, rather like a radio show. It’s a method of recording, publishing and distributing the spoken word on a website or blog. Your visitors click the play button and listen to your words of wisdom through their speakers or headphones. See my earlier article on the benefits of podcasting . The featured video this week shows you how to record, edit, publish and distribute your podcast.
