These mini laptops have caused a stir in the education sector, not least because they offer many Samsung Q10 features found on full-sized laptops, including built-in wireless networking. Their low cost (?169) is partly down to their use of open source software like the Linux operating system and free software packages such as Open Office. This does away with many software licensing costs incurred when using Microsoft Windows. So what are they like in practice?

Hackers will soon gain a powerful new tool for breaking into Oracle Corp’s database, the top-selling business software used by companies to store electronic information. Security experts have developed an easy-to-use, automated software tool that can remotely break into Oracle databases over the Internet to simulate attacks on computer systems, but cybercrooks can use it for hacking. The tool’s authors created it through a controversial open-source software project known as Metasploit, which releases its free software over the Web.

Click2Try is a unique website which allows you to test open source software in the browser itself so that you don’t go through the hassle of downloading and installing the software. It uses Java to run the apps and works on all modern browsers. There are various software under different categories like business, education, linux etc which you can test. Registration is not required to try an app but if you want to save your sessions then you would need to sign up.

The group of some 70 organizations (Sun, Oracle, O’Reilly, EFF, Pentaho…) have banded together to form Open Source for America . The goal: to “serve as a unified voice for the promotion of open source software in the U.S. Federal Government arena.
