Next month’s Gov2.0 Summit (9-10 Sep) is going to be a great event.  From what I’ve seen of the agenda and the hard work the conference organizers have been putting into this I can tell it will bring together a great mix of techies, govies, innovators and citizens in a fast-moving, productive discussion about Web2.0 [...] Related posts:Vision for the Enterprise CTO: Lessons from DNI Vision 2015The Technology Implications of the Obama WinSome “Must Attend” Events in the Federal IT Space [This

Software designed by open source standards has security built in and has been found to be fielded with far fewer faults per unit of code than proprietary development houses.  There are many reasons for this.  This factor is especially true when the open source code is commercially supported.  For example, Linux, which has the strength [...] Related posts:A proposal for government certification of open source softwareOpen Source for America: A resource for the Gov2.0 CTOOpen Source Databases

p2pnet news view Freedom | P2P:- Incredible though it may seem, the Australian government seems bound and determined to use taxpayer money in an enterprise to spy on taxpayers on behalf of the Korporate Kopyright Kartels who, of course, are not taxpaying citizens of Australia. “In the Australian Federal Government’s latest assault on the internet,” writes [.] Did it ever really go away? I’m starting to realize that my cell phone is out of date. So, I’m looking to get a new one soon-ish. My current cell phone is an LG VX6000 through US Cellular. For the purposes of talking on the phone, it gets the job done just fine. I don’t use the easyedge features. I wish it were a bit more customizable. It only supports MIDI sound that I’m aware of. The only way I’ve found to add my own music is to buy this USB cable off ebay, and use some open source software to access it, but even then I can’t completely customize.

So far this is my favorite piece on the “Freemium” concept.  It comes via Union Square ventures a vc based in NYC. Click Here To Find Out Why Chris Anderson & Malcolm Gladwell Are Wrong! Introduction (Via UnionSquare) Anderson’s book points out that the cost of providing web services is declining as a result of open source software, commodity hardware, and cheap bandwidth. Gladwell agrees with the trend but notes that it is very expensive for YouTube to host video.

Has your wife ever deleted photos from her camera and begged you to recover them? (Mine did!) Did you accidentally delete a movie off of your hard disk that you really wanted to watch? Thanks to some wonderful open-source software named PhotoRec , it’s really easy to recover your data. It’s available for free for Windows, Mac OS X, and most UNIX flavors. PhotoRec is a command-line utility, but also surprisingly user-friendly.

I was reading this month’s Computer magazine and found an interesting article by Charles Rich entitled Building Task-Based User Interfaces with ANSI/CEA-2018 . It sounded like an interesting UI abstraction so I went after the standard to look through it. And that’s when I was reminded of something: ANSI/CEA-2018 is one of those paid standards. If I want to read anything beyond the index of the standard, I have to pay $85.00 (or $63.75 if I was a member).
