This afternoon I sent in my submission to the consultation . Today is September 11?th, and Sunday September 13?th is the last day make your voice heard in the 2009 copyright consultation. There are so many more things I would like to say on copyright, but at 8 pages I felt it was already pretty long. I have given several presentations lasting an hour for what amounts to a single clause in the 1996 WIPO treaties. The format of this consultation doesn’t allow us the ability to discuss at this level of detail, but only very broadly.

At this week’s Gov 2.0 Summit, the feds seemed to have a coming out party of sorts for their new approach to IT in government – do it faster, lighter and be more transparent. Kundra & Chopra spoke about how open standards and building platforms for citizens to expound on government data should be major parts of new federal IT spending. The agenda was filled with sermons on the virtue of transparency and the wisdom of open source. Watching these things be taken so seriously warms my heart.

The other day I received an email from a faculty member, asking me if there were any free forum tools that allowed threaded discussions. She said she had looked at http://www.freeforums.org but could not see any way the discussions could be viewed in a threaded format. I had never heard of free forums, so of course had to detour whatever I had been doing (must not have been that important, since I don’t remember what it was!) and take a look at it. Free Forums is actually a very powerful tool to quickly create online discussion forums.

As we commemorate the eighth anniversary of the September 11th attacks, now recognized as a National Day of Service and Remembrance , we’ve come to understand that a powerful way to honor those who lost their lives, were injured and stepped up to help that day, is by volunteering to help our communities and our country. It is in that spirit that the Mozilla Service Week , which begins on September 14, offers us a chance to use the Internet to make the world and the Web a better place for everyone.
