So, as you may know we’re running a WordPress MU and BuddyPress plugin contest this year – like we did last year – and for which we’re stumping up $1000, just like we are for the corresponding regular WordPress plugin contest in 2009 (as we also did in 2008). All plugins have to be freely available, have to be 100% GPL compatible and – in short – be completely sweet with the WP rules.

Hi Oz! I thought you’d like this story. This young man apparently keeps coming up with new ideas, (like rafting down the Charles River on a raft made of bottles). However, this particular idea I thought might interest you. He launched a camera into near-space using a weather balloon, a cell phone, hand warmers and a drink cooler. Pretty whacky idea, huh? All of the parts they used are commonly available. Yeh and Lee bought a Canon camera on eBay and then fastened it inside a Styrofoam cooler.

From a Summary via ACM TechNews: European researchers are attempting to connect thousands of digital repositories into a massive network of easily searchable online data under the auspices of the DRIVER project. The researchers already have developed a search engine that regroups more than 1 million open access articles from 260 of Europe’s top institutions. The DRIVER system uses a suite of open source software known as D-NET, which lets users or institutions individually tailor their experience regardless of their location.

Between Michael Arrington’s rants on TechCrunch about music’s “inevitable” march towards being free and Chris Anderson’s Free: The Future of a Radical Price (note the price tag), there’s been no shortage of talk in the business/tech geek world about the whether or not music, entertainment and a lot of other things are destined to be free, leaving money to be made on shows, personal appearances or merchandise. The main argument in favor is, of course, Google.
