Named Karmic Koala, the new Ubuntu – as always – promises to be faster and easier to use, bringing version 2.6.31 of the Linux kernel, latest version of GNOME, and Firefox 3.5. The biggest news, however, is Ubuntu One, a web sync service that gives you 2 GB of online disk space and lets you synchronize notes and contacts, as well as share files between several computers.

(QuIC) and the Symbian Foundation, today announced that QuIC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, has joined the Symbian Foundation and has been appointed to the Symbian Foundation board of directors. Anyway, I downloaded the evaluation version from the Resharper website and tried it out. If you are prepared to deal with a very slight slow-down in your Visual Studio environment (inevitable with add-ons) it’s an add-on well worth investigating.

There have been a few open source projects that have made the GNU/Linux community all happy as hell and one of the best is GNOME Do . While not really a member of the GNOME project many of us will admit to considering it one of the best apps ever written, which you can see on their new Preview page , and once you’ve used it for a while you hate having to use an operating system without it. Do you know who visits your website? How many visitors you get? On which pages they arrive and leave? How long they stay? You should know the answer to all these questions. Your webhost analytics will give you some data. If you have C Panel (very popular webhost interface), webalizer is provided as standard. But, 3rd party analytics programs will give you much more information. Google Analytics is free and it’s an excellent program, but choice is good.  Sourceforge is the world’s largest open source software development websites with more than 230,000 software projects.

In an attempt to improve performance and also consolidate some of this blog’s functionality I have been busy decommissioning a few plugins. As I have mentioned previously WordPress Plugins are excellent value and potentially give one’s blog that little bit of extra pizzaz. The self hosted blog of course, has the added advantage of being able to install and run the full collection of plugins as opposed to a hosted blog which has only a limited choice available.

This topic has always interested me, ever since I first wanted to make a “real” Website when I was in middle school. I didn’t know much about how it all worked, except that you needed a big computer to be on all the time and hooked up to the ‘net. Well, while that is true in theory, I eventually learned that most people don’t host their own Web sites because it’s often always a very practical use of one’s time. On the other hand, if you’re interested in knowing more about running a server, even if it’s in mini scale, there’s a reason to try self-hosting.

This past week the 2009 Utah Open Source Conference was held October 8th thought October 10th. I was fortunate enough to attend both Thursday and Friday. This was the third year it has been held and the first year I attended. I definitely plan on attending next year, and I might even submit a few abstracts for presentations. So without further ado I’ll give you a run down of my experience. SWAG As you can tell I picked up ton of free stuff!
