[Windows only] As part of the WinX DVD range of product, Winx DVD Author is a cool tool that allows you to author and create your own DVD easily. For those who are looking for a professional, yet easy to use DVD authoring software, WinX DVD Author could be the one for you. At MakeTechEasier, we don’t usually review paid software as we are great believers of free and open source software. However, the WinX DVD team decided to give away a free 1 year license (scroll down for the download link), which makes it compelling for us to give this DVD authoring software a second look.

Mozilla Labs Thunderbird team is working on new, open source software aimed at making your email life easier by unifying many platforms in one place. Raindrop will use a smart filtering technology to separate the important, personal messages from the background noise of alerts, friend requests, direct message alerts etc. Possibly the most exciting part of this project is that, unlike Thunderbird, Raindrop is a web app. Email used to house the bulk of the conversations that took place on the internet, but that’s no longer the case today.

It is kind of similar to how you download a Compressed Zip file from a website, and you use 7-zip or WinZip to extract the file to your computer.

The following is a list of the software I installed on the new MacBook Pro in the first 24 hours. Dropbox : A drop-dead simple piece of the “cloud.” 2GB for free and clients for Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X. Adium : Hands down the best multi-protocol chat client for Mac OS X Tweetie : A twitter client. I had been using Twitterrific but decided to switch. Not sure I entirely like the user experience. iPulse : The most organic, and beautiful, system activity gage/ monitor you’ll ever see.

Open Source CLOUD SIEM, Anybody?chuvakin.blogspot.com

“It’s too bad I am not building an open-source SIEM … but if I would” ( extra credit : guess the inspiration for this line), I would actually not build a software security information and event management (SIEM) product. If I were doing it (and I am not!),  I’d built an open-source-based “cloud SIEM” with a default option to have it hosted by the vendor (that is you) as well as with a possibility to have it hosted by the customer (that is, old school on-premise model).
