Aid agencies turn to open-source software – science-in-society – 03 October 2009 – New Scientist A VIRTUAL emergency response centre dubbed Collabbit could be just what relief agencies need to coordinate their aid efforts in the aftermath of a disaster when speed is crucial. Collabbit is the handiwork of the Humanitarian Free and Open Source Software project (HFOSS). It acts as central repository for information, sending out project updates to workers via RSS or text message.

After the fantastic week in Bathurst at Charles Sturt University and AuSakai 09 I spent a fun weekend in Sydney with Clay Fenlason. He and I hung out with my friend Mike Erlin, a former colleague at DigitalThink who went to Australia (with his Australian wife) to work for WebCT. He now is CEO of an e-learning company in Sydney called Workstar and he and his family were very nice to host us for a day at the beach and then an early dinner at their place near Yowie Bay (some photos on Facebook and Flickr).

Red Hat has decided to take its fight against software patents all the way to the Supreme Court. I know you guys are kinda split on the issue but do you think Red Hat has a chance or are they just wasting their time? “Red Hat continues its commitment to the free and open-source software community by taking a strong position against bad software patents,” said Rob Tiller, vice president and assistant general counsel for Red Hat. “Our patent system is supposed to foster innovation, but for open-source and software in general, it does the opposite.

Web hosting providers, CirtexHosting and HostV, will join the fight against cancer by donating a portion of its sales in October to the Jimmy Fund, which supports cancer research and care at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. John Xie, President of Cirtex Corp. remarked, ”In one way or another, cancer affects us all. At Cirtex Corp, we’ve seen the effects of cancer up and close, and it’s our moral obligation to stand up and do our part to help advance the important research that offers the hope of better treatment and higher survival rates.
