After the dust from the Snow Leopard and Windows 7 launch has settled, we have another important OS launch: the new version of one of the most popular Linux distributions, Ubuntu 9.10 , is available for download. Named Karmic Koala, the new Ubuntu – as always – promises to be faster and easier to use, bringing version 2.6.31 of the Linux kernel, latest version of GNOME, and Firefox 3.5. The biggest news, however, is Ubuntu One, a web sync service that gives you 2 GB of online disk space and lets you synchronize notes and contacts, as well as share files between several computers.

Microsoft Office is a wonderful suite of programs, but it’s not cheap. And some people I’ve talked to just can’t get used to the 2007 version and don’t want to. If you’re looking for free alternatives, you’re in luck – there are several options out there, and they will replace all but a couple of Outlook features. Open Office Open Office is a completely free, open-source software suite that handles “word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, databases and more.” That means it handles everything Office does except email and OneNote, and has the addition of a very decent graphics program for editing images.

You know it’s going to be a good week when it kicks off with news that the Obama administration has officially embraced the open source content management system Drupal. Just a few days later, the Department of Defense issued an almost glowingly positive memo on open source software. “The government is acting intelligently. I feel strange,” quipped Zarf on Slashdot. “And thus another chair is thrown in Redmond,” wrote hrimhari. Just goes to show, never underestimate the power of freedom!

A while ago I heard about an add-on for Visual Studio called Jetbrains Resharper – most people reading this article have probably heard of it, too. Anyway, I downloaded the evaluation version from the Resharper website and tried it out. If you are prepared to deal with a very slight slow-down in your Visual Studio environment (inevitable with add-ons) it’s an add-on well worth investigating.

The White House Web team decided to go with open source software for www.whitehouse.gov   “We now have a technology platform to get more and more voices on the site,” announced White House new media director Macon Phillips to the Associated Press. “This is state-of-the-art technology and the government is a participant in it.”White House officials described the change as similar to rebuilding the foundation of a building without changing the street-level appearance of the facade.

I feel as if we just crossed this path the other day. But that’s okay. On the grand scale of “pony-themed games” to “extremely useful freeware applications,” automatic application installers–or package mangers–tend to fall toward the latter end of the spectrum. I wouldn’t be broaching this topic so close to a previous, similar roundup were it not critically important for you to check out some of the apps that I’ve recently found.

In: All News 26Oct2009 I am writing this blog post in the aptly named “Post Blog Entry” program I installed into the latest Ubuntu release. I installed this several nights ago, and think I finally have a decent grip to be able to give an honest review of the latest.Let me be first to say that if you thought Windows 7 and Snow Leopard weren’t full releases, you’ll feel the same way here. It’s a little polish here, a little update there.

Mozilla Labs Thunderbird team is working on new, open source software aimed at making your email life easier by unifying many platforms in one place. Raindrop will use a smart filtering technology to separate the important, personal messages from the background noise of alerts, friend requests, direct message alerts etc. Possibly the most exciting part of this project is that, unlike Thunderbird, Raindrop is a web app. Email used to house the bulk of the conversations that took place on the internet, but that’s no longer the case today.

“It’s too bad I am not building an open-source SIEM … but if I would” ( extra credit : guess the inspiration for this line), I would actually not build a software security information and event management (SIEM) product. Today we launched our revamped and renamed Novell News blog. Our old Open PR blog was originally conceived as a way to give voice to Novell’s views on open source software, Linux, and our mixed-source business model. Over time, the blog has become a much stronger information source for all of Novell, and increasingly a primary vehicle for breaking news. Hence, we’ve rechristened the blog to reflect its news agenda, and we’ve also given it greater prominence on our corporate website.

I originally put this post together for RSC NewsFeed , but thought worth reposting here: One of the great features of open source software is the potential for the wider community to start rapidly developing and integrating new features, in many ways utilising the power of the crowd. The web browser Firefox is a great example. Its origins lie in the developers frustrations of developer driven feature creep. Creating an open project has resulted in a staggering number of add-on customisations.

One increasingly important aspect of modern document management and enterprise content management software is effective records management . Properly defined, records management is the collection, classification and planned retention or destruction of an organization’s information. Unfortunately, records management tends more often to be two things: not clearly understood and not properly implemented. Faced with increased regulations and the fear of legal action, organizations are working towards doing it better.

The essay contrasts two different free software development models, the Cathedral model, where source code is available with each release but the code developed between releases remains restricted, and the Bazaar model where the code is developed over the Internet in view of the public.

This topic has always interested me, ever since I first wanted to make a “real” Website when I was in middle school. I didn’t know much about how it all worked, except that you needed a big computer to be on all the time and hooked up to the ‘net. Well, while that is true in theory, I eventually learned that most people don’t host their own Web sites because it’s often always a very practical use of one’s time. On the other hand, if you’re interested in knowing more about running a server, even if it’s in mini scale, there’s a reason to try self-hosting.

Big banks, big pharma, big problems , writes John Martin, MONEY has thrown society out of kilter. Banks that once appeared to have mountains of cash have collapsed. As a consequence of the global recession, governments now recognise that banking is too important to be left to the bankers. States have taken action, from wresting control of financial institutions to introducing new regulations. I believe the financial meltdown has implications for pharmaceutical research.

A mixture of good and bad in Clare Curran’s blog on productivity: We have a productivity taskforce set up by the National Government and led by the ignominious Don Brash. It’s likely to come up with an argument for economic growth which is about selling our state assets and keeping wages down, or cutting jobs to create more profits. Because that’s what the conservative side of politics believes productivity to be. Gordon Campbell’s piece on this a couple of months ago is worth reading.

In The Mythology of Intellectual Property , I mentioned that “The Product of the Intellect Isn’t Property” and pointed out that, consequently: Even the law doesn’t recognize copyright as “property”. If you violate copyright laws, it is not called “theft”; it is called “copyright infringement”. There’s always someone willing to argue the point, though, no matter how wrong the person might be. I guess not everyone in the world has read my comments on the subject yet.

Google wants to enable Google applications to run as well as possible as many places as possible. Here is how: Google applications: Web applications run in browsers, on all kinds of systems. No need to be installed or updated, and hard to block. Anyone with IE, Firefox, Safari, Opera, or, of course, Chrome has access to all the latest applications. Gears: Web applications run in a sandbox and don’t have much access to your system. Gears enables more access.

Consumers Pay for Contentdracotorre.com

In the essay, “ Post-Medium Publishing ,” Paul Graham claims that consumers never pay for content. He begins with the observation that publishers set prices based on the cost of production and distribution of the format. The essay offers some consideration about the future of book publishing. I present a few observations and argue that consumers pay for content. The essay helps demonstrate a writing tip in the second paragraph: In fact consumers never really were paying for content, and publishers weren’t really selling it either.

Although many graphics professionals turn to Windows or Mac OS to execute their designs, Linux is far from helpless in this area. While it helps that Adobe Photoshop, the undisputed gold-standard program that most professionals use for raster graphics, runs on Linux through Wine, there are several native Linux programs that offer some of the same functionality. Furthermore, there are many free vector graphics programs that can produce infinitely scalable graphics much like what Adobe Illustrator can do.

SSL encrypt the segments of network connections at the Transport Layer end-to-end. Several versions of the protocols are in wide-spread use in applications like web browsing, electronic mail, Internet faxing, instant messaging and voice-over-IP (VoIP).
