On 20 April 2009, Oracle Corporation announced its acquisition of Sun Microsystems in a deal worth about US$ 6 billion. This would have been just another one of corporate mega-deals that sound interesting in the news but really have no effect on your life. Except for the fact that with the purchase, Oracle acquired the world’s most widely used open-source database engine- MySQL. About 12 million small databases, mainly in websites and small businesses, run on the open-source MySQL platform, since it is stable, easily adaptable and most important of all for cash-strapped small companies, free.

I am a big fan of open source software so at home I use Gimp which is an open source alternative to Photoshop.  One of my favorite features of Photoshop is its “save for web” feature which lets you downsize images so they will load more quickly on websites you support.  I found a plug-in today for Gimp which allows that capability so I thought I would share it in hope that those who also use Gimp could benefit if you happen to be reading this blog.  If you don’t have Gimp you can grab a copy over

The seven deadly sins are, according to the FSF, the “seven major areas where proprietary software in general and Microsoft Windows in particular hurt all computer users: invading privacy, poisoning education, locking users in, abusing standards, leveraging monopolistic behavior, enforcing DRM (Digital Restrictions Management), and threatening user security.”Beside the Web site, and a public demonstration at the Boston Common, the FSF elaborated on these points in a letter to the leaders of the Fortune 500 companies.

A few weeks back Nev wrote a post asking for feedback from his readers about his blog and himself in general.  In the comments someone mentioned that they wished he would post more about his e-commerce site, House of Rave . He responded: I sincerely wish I could post more about House Of Rave since I love writing about it. I’ve refrained quite a lot to reveal less to competitors and avoid copycats. There is a DIRECT correlation between how much I write about my business and how many people immediately try to emulate it.

Tomorrow, the Department of Health and Human Services will host its first “code-a-thon” dedicated to the National Health Information Network and its Connect software. About 80 programmers, led by Apache developer (and Collabnet employee) Brian Behlendorf , will spend about four hours trying to stamp out bugs in the open source software gateway, which is based on National Health Information Network (NHIN) conventions. Behlendorf’s presence is not ceremonial, as CollabNet runs the military’s forge.mil open source forge site .

I’ve used Moodle for about four years, and in that time I’ve found it to be an exceptionally useful, high-functioning and user-friendly learning management system (LMS). In my view, the one deficiency in its suite of resources is that it is less than intuitive in the way it enables administrators, teachers, and learners to create, integrate, manage, and deliver images, audio, video, animations and other media types.Enter Packt Publishing’s Moodle 1.9 Multimedia by João Pedro Soares Fernandes.I opened my copy of the text with a high expectation that it would be an informative and  practical reference text.

Bloggers: Should You Use Blogger.com or WordPress? Blogger.com (also known as Blogspot) and WordPress are the two most commonly used blogging platforms today. Blogger.com was a pioneer in the blogging industry, allowing users to set up accounts and blog for free beginning in 1999. Blogger.com was purchased by Google in 2003, which enabled it to grow using Google’s resources. Today, Blogger.com has an undisclosed number of millions of users blogging on their system.

Depending on your skill level, network, and current traffic levels your blog has a variety of options. When you look for new revenue streams, think about what you do well. I haven’t been too happy with my current podcast capturing setup, so I decided to change it. The setup did include starting up a Windows 2000 VM, starting up Juice in that, then downloading any new podcasts. I then moved the files from the VM to a directory on my workstation. At that point, I had to change the ownership of the files and then move them to a USB stick. As I said, there are way too many steps in that sequence to do every morning. Last night I installed a Linux podcast aggregator called hpodder.

The importance of scriptsthoughtsontranslation.com
08/25/2009
I’m a big believer in writing scripts for important occasions; the first time that I presented at the ATA annual conference (a presentation on free and open source software at the 2004 ATA conference in Toronto), I typed out every single word I was going to say, including a few pre-scripted jokes. When Eve Bodeux and I record our podcast episodes, we write out a fairly complete script for the episode; these days when I do presentations I don’t necessarily write out a full script, but I make a detailed outline of the talking points for each slide I’m going to cover.

Pi-Con was delightful! I’m always amazed at conventions by the people I meet. On panels, sure: it’s a pleasure and privilege to chat with the other panelists about the topic of the hour, and I’m not surprised to meet smart, accomplished, articulate panelists. But the people I talk to in the hallways, the vendors, and the folks who end up going out to dinner together are, as often as not, also smart and articulate and accomplished.

I’ve talked here before about open-source software development, and how it fits into the overall IT landscape.  Probably the largest and best-known open-source project is the Linux operating system .  Linux is a “work-alike clone” of UNIX; it was begun in 1991 by Linus Torvalds while he was a student at the University of Helsinki.  Although a complete Linux OS distribution, like Ubuntu, SuSE, or Debian contains a great deal of software, including the X Window GUI system, utilities and tools from

Hot on the heels of the news of UNIX’s 40th anniversary comes a Linux Foundation report entitled Who Writes Linux . This report investigates who is contributing to the Linux kernel, and how much: “Since 2005, over 5000 individual developers from nearly 500 different companies have contributed to the kernel. The Linux kernel, thus, has become a common resource developed on a massive scale by companies which are fierce competitors in other areas.” Wow! It bears noting that an analysis like this is only available because Linux is open source software.

I was thinking about the changing tides in software buying trends and how these changes can be such a huge win for education.  Education professionals have always known the value of collaboration and sharing of ideas.  It just took the technology industry a bit of time to catch up.  The good news is it is happening. The days of expensive, proprietary software packages are ending.  The new way of collaborative, standards-based open source technology is here.  And with it comes, more development, more innovation yet for less money and much easier.

The Magic Quadrant for Web Content Management came out for the first time this month.  I say the first time because it was always a Market Scope before the 2009 report.  If you look at it, you can learn many things.  The one thing you won’t learn is if any of the products are right for you, but we’ll get to that in a minute. Jon Marks did a good job of comparing Gartner’s and Forrester’s latest rankings and highlights how a “Niche Player” may be worth considering.

Now i know its not greatly safe to download programs from torrents and i do it at my own risk (blah blah blah), however, i’ve used them before to get “Regcure”. I recently downloaded the “Vegas movie studio platinum” torrent and when installing the actual program, it said it was removing software. Obviously i went crazy as it should never remove ANY software when installing a new program, tried to cancel, and wouldnt work. Then my computer reset itself, and reloaded saying it had recovered from a serious error.

I’m a huge believer in doing what you say others should be doing. Libraries are dedicated to open access to information. I think that’s a very good thing because when information is withheld, enormous amounts of energy are wasted duplicate efforts since everyone has to start from scratch. It really limits what you can accomplish.I keep running into situations where libraries increasingly fail to live up to their rhetoric.

There are four lessons that corporate innovators can draw from Y Combinator:You can do a lot for a little. It amazes me when corporations complain that they lack adequate financial resources for innovation. With open source software, online market research tools, and the ability to create virtual prototypes, you can do a huge amount for $10,000. A lack of financial resources is very rarely a rate limiter.Tight windows enable “good enough” design.

Let’s consider the growing list: IBM’s purchase of Gluecode, Novell’s purchase of SUSE, Citrix’s XenSource deal, Nokia’s Trolltech buy, Sun’s purchase of MySQL, Oracle’s purchase of Sun (and hence MySQL and OpenOffice) and now VMware’s planned $420 million acquisition of SpringSource.

August 10th, 2009 | by Sean | I had this great idea to write about politics and open source software, and rented isono.my for a year as a domain to do it on. I decided after a few months that I wouldn’t continue with it, for … the same reason I’m not going to finish this sentence. It’s a pity to let the articles just disappear though, so I’ve copied them from the now defunct blog to this one.Copying articles from one WordPress blog to anotherIt’s very easy, just go into the Dashboard of the origin blog and use Tools..Export to export the articles to a file on your own PC.

Popular Science bitches and moans about how the rumored Apple Tablet could ruin computing. [h/t Instapundit ] The Apple Tablet is rumored to be a cross between a laptop and an iPhone. The iPhone isn’t really a cell phone, rather, it is a handheld computer employing a touch interface with a cell phone built-in . It uses a slimmed down version of Apple’s MacOS X operating system that Apple uses on all its computers.

Admittedly,it’s a difficult subject: there’s a lot to cover, and you really need quite a bit of programming and general Unix knowledge before you could even consider jumping into this area. But I have the background, have even written simple Unix drivers, and yet every other kernel programming book has disappointed me.

1. It almost goes without saying, but open source software (OSS) is free. 2. A vast array of high quality open source applications already exist to solve almost every conceivable business problem. 3. OSS is developed from a more efficient programming paradigm which means more applications can be hosted on a given server. 4. It is incredibly cheap to implement. £30 per year will buy a web hosting package from eukhost.com capable of running a content managed website, a CRM system, a customer support forum and a mailing list manager with 24/7 high quality server-level technical support.

How fitting: the copyright-obsessed Associated Press has written a story about News Corporation’s plans to charge for access to its websites: Visitors to the Web sites of newspapers owned by News Corp. will have to start coughing up fees to read the news within the next year, Chairman Rupert Murdoch said. It’s risky for the company because a pay barrier could drive away Web traffic – and with it, advertising revenue.

Nine months ago, Linux.com stopped publishing. Four months later, the announcement came that its web address had been bought by the Linux Foundation. The change wasn’t the end of independent news about the free and open source software (FOSS)community, but it has left a gap that is still unfilled. And, although as a ex-stringer for Linux.com, my bias is obvious, I can’t help thinking that the community is poorer for it.

Software Freedom Day 2009 planning is getting into full swing! As the Ubuntu Maryland team did last year, we are planning a day of talks and discussions about Open Source Software and its benefits. While there may be a bias towards the Linux platform in general and the Ubuntu distribution in particular we are open to talks on Open Source projects for any OS platform. In addition we are hoping to have some talks on open formats and standards. The important aspect to remember about these talks are they should be geared toward end users.

I went down to Emory University this Thursday & Friday to participate in a workshop on the open source software program Zotero. Zotero is a citation management program developed at the Center for History & New Media at George Mason University. A graduate student in reference first introduced us to it and I started using it for a way to manage the Liam Miller personal library. The ease of use & the ability to organize the material make me a fan.
